Langtang Valley and Gosaikunda Trek Overview

This is a superb introduction for trekking rookies heading to Nepal among some of the most amazing scenery in the Himalayas. The Langtang Valley is the closest Himalayan destination from medieval Kathmandu valley. Ironically, despite being so close to Kathmandu, this Region is a blockbuster for the wild similar to the Tibetan highlands with heavenly rural landscapes that set the imaginations on overdrive. The valley runs west to east, on an even keel with the Tibetan border; yet, north of Kathmandu, we find famous trekking trails, that are not crowded like the Khumbu or Annapurna zones. Langtang valley provides trekkers with an of mind-blowing countryside which includes verdant forests to ascetic high mountain landscapes, and stunning views of the Ganesh, Langtang, and Jugal mountains that make you feel heady and dizzy.

Bill Tilman, a famous British explorer, described Langtang as the most ‘Beautiful valley in the world’; and it has been so ever since Tillman first discovered this region. The valley is bordered by high peaks of amazing features and is said to be a ‘treasure trove’ of alpine plants. The Langtang valley is a spectacular sight in spring when the whole area is literally decked with a carpet of beautiful flowers that literally stuns the senses of its beholders.

The Lantang Valley captivating journey starts from Syabrubesi, which is a day long drive away from Kathmandu via Trisuli. The trail cuts through densely forested areas of blue pine, oaks, maple, spruce and rhododendron (one fourth of the valley park is all verdant forest). The trail clings to the Langtang Khola river bank until Kyangjin gompa.

Langtang valley doesn’t only give us sublime views of Langtang Lirung at [7,234m] and the huge Ganesh peak at [7,406m], we also come down to earth by learning of the different ethnic lifestyles of the Tamang and Sherpa communities that inhabit this zone and we observe similarities that are so much like the people in Tibet.

Kyangjin Ri at (4,350 m) is roughly two hours up and something like an hour down and it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayas if we desire to explore this area. After exploring the region, we hike back the same route to Syabrubesi from where we drive back to Kathmandu.

This morning we have a long and steady climb up to the Laurebina La (4610m.), the high point of this trek, through pastures and past small crags, to reach the pass, just above a small lake. The views do not really appear until you have walked a bit further, rounding a corner and then looking down towards the Gosiakunda (4336m) - the very best views are to be had by climbing one of the small hills, either to the right or left, for a panorama of the Manaslu and Ganesh Himal and the very close looking and very snowy peaks of the Langtang. We soon reach the holy lake of Gosiankund, the black rock in the middle said to be the head of Shiva, the waters formed by him from a glacier, to slake his thirst after drinking poison. During the full moon in August, the place is thronging with Hindu pilgrims. We now follow an excellently constructed path, contouring the north side of the valley, now the headwaters of the Trisuli Khola, to come out onto a ridge that overlooks the main Langtang Valley, with Syrabrubensi almost 3000m. below! We descend the ridge to the few lodges of Laurebina Yak (3950m.) where we can leisurely watch the sunset behind Manaslu and the Ganesh, and rise again, making the mountains glow pink, beyond the misty depths of the valley of the Bhote Kosi. The mountains of Tibet are clearly in view, just right of the Ganesh peaks. We retire to our lodge for the night

Bhairav Lake has a severe beauty. The next sacred bowl is Gosain Kund. According to Hindu legend Lord Shiva, a powerful hindu diety, created this lake by piercing the glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after having swallowed Kalkut poison that threatened to destroy the world. The large rock in the center of the lake is said to be the remains of a Shiva shrine. Later we take a trail that goes down across Laurebina and Cholangpati to Sing Gompa. Sing Gompa is the main attraction at Chandan Bari, which also has several hotels and a small cheese factory; this is where we enjoy our sleep for the night after a long day.
