Fly to Lukla and trek to Phakding
The flight to Lukla takes around 20 to 35 minutes, depending on the operating airport and conditions. The STOL aircraft offers spectacular views of the eastern Himalayas, with the best mountain views generally from the left side of the aircraft.
Lukla Airport was built in the 1960s with the support of Sir Edmund Hillary and the local Sherpa community. On arrival, we meet our trekking crew and begin our trek through the Dudh Koshi Valley. We follow a well-marked trail through mountain villages, forests, and along the river before reaching Phakding, where we spend the night.

Trek to Ama Dablam Base Camp and trek back to Pangboche
Today, we trek towards Ama Dablam Base Camp, climbing gradually through the rugged alpine landscape to a high crest in the sheltered valley. Ama Dablam is one of the Himalayas’ most iconic peaks and a popular destination for climbing expeditions, so you may see climbers and expedition teams preparing for their summit attempts at base camp. The mountain’s distinctive shape carries deep meaning in Sherpa culture. Its long ridges resemble the protective arms of a mother, while the hanging glacier represents the dablam, the traditional double-pendant worn by Sherpa women and believed to symbolize protection.
After spending time exploring the base camp and enjoying the spectacular mountain surroundings, we descend towards Pangboche in the afternoon. The trail has several ups and downs and crosses the Imja Khola once more on a steel suspension bridge before joining the main trail to Pangboche.

Itinerary Disclaimer: Your safety is of imperative concern while traveling with Highland Expeditions. Please take care to note that your leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it is deemed necessary due to your safety concerns. Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary; however, since this adventure entails traveling in remote mountainous regions, we cannot guarantee that we will not deviate from it. The weather or health condition of a group member, unexpected natural disasters, etc., can all contribute to changes in the itinerary. The trek leader will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but please be prepared to be flexible if required.
Lukla Flight: Plane flights in Nepal, especially those to Lukla, are generally dependent on weather conditions. These flights operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), which require clear weather. If the weather is poor, all flights for the day will be canceled. In the event of a flight cancellation, we will try to arrange a helicopter flight, as helicopters can sometimes operate in conditions where planes cannot. However, you will be responsible for the additional costs, which can range from $300 to $500 or more, depending on factors such as the number of people sharing the flight, availability, and demand. This extra amount is after crediting your plane fare. If delays continue for several days and neither a helicopter nor a plane flight is an option, we will collectively decide how to proceed. This is particularly important if delays occur before the trek, as the original itinerary may no longer be feasible. Your guide will assist you throughout this process, and we expect your understanding and cooperation. Therefore, it is important to include contingency days in Kathmandu after the trek to account for potential delays. If there are no cancellations and flights operate as scheduled, you can use the extra days for sightseeing in and around the Kathmandu Valley.
