Dolpo Jomsom Trek Overview
The Upper Dolpo to Jomsom Trek in Dolpa, Nepal, features beautiful high-altitude views near the Annapurna range. It sits in a "rain shadow" area of the Himalayas; The region has become a desert because the mountains block the rain and prevent plants from growing. Although Dolpo doesn’t have the tallest peaks like Everest or Kanchenjunga, its unique Tibetan culture draws local and international tourists. More visitors will likely come as improvements are made to the Juphal airfield near Dunai.
The Upper Dolpo to Jomsom Trek is a place that still keeps the old pre-Buddhist religion based on shamanism, known as Bong Po. While trekking, be careful when adjusting to the altitude, as you will need to cross several high passes, like Kang La, Saladang La, and Chharka La, which are all over 5000 meters high. Some people in Dolpo lead a nomadic lifestyle, moving to find better grazing land for their livestock, which supports their simple way of life. To the south, the Upper Mustang has ancient ruins and stunning mountains. The Upper Dolpo to Jomsom Trek is ideal for adventure seekers. So let’s get into some details on why you should experience the Upper Dolpo to Jomsom Trek.

Why choose the Upper Dolpo to Jomsom Trek?
The Upper Dolpo trek is a challenging adventure in a remote area that offers stunning views of natural beauty and the chance of cultural immersion. You’ll experience traditional nomadic lives influenced by Tibetan Buddhism and encounter stunning sights like Shey Phoksundo Lake, known for its incredible blue color and surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Be prepared for long days, high altitudes, and poorly marked trails. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why you should trek Upper Dolpo and the Jomsom trek.
Remote and Untouched Scenery:
The Upper Dolpo trek is probably the most isolated trek in Nepal. It passes through the remote Upper Dolpo region, which is known for its striking landscapes. This area includes high deserts, dry mountain ranges, and the beautiful Phoksundo Lake. Many trekkers refer to it as a camping trek since they have to camp in tents for most of the days due to a lack of teahouses.
High-Altitude Passes:
The trek includes crossing five high passes: Nangdalo La Pass (5,350 m), Sela (Gelu) La Pass, Mo La Pass, Niwar Pass, and Jungben La Pass. You will enjoy stunning views of the Himalayas from the top of the passes. In order to reach this pass, the trekkers have to climb from lower Dolpo and weave their way from Inner Dolpo, which makes it quite adventurous.
Cultural Immersion:
You will experience unique Buddhist and Bonpo cultures. You will visit ancient monasteries like Shey Gompa and Tsakang Gompa and meet local communities. Apart from the chance to witness Nepal’s amazing beauty, the chance of cultural immersion is also quite an amazing incentive.
High Passes on the trek to Upper Dolpo to Jomsom
One of the major attractions of the Upper Dolpo trek is climbing some of the region’s tallest passes. During this trek, trekkers will encounter ancient Tibetan Buddhist traditions, stunning turquoise lakes like Shey Phoksundo, and, most notably, a series of high Himalayan passes that demand physical and mental resilience. These high passes are a defining feature of the Upper Dolpo Trek, each offering unique vistas and challenges.
Nangdala Pass
Nangdala Pass is at an elevation of around 5,350 meters. It’s one of the major attractions of the Upper Dolpo trek. Think of it like a mountain highway, but way back in the day. It was the route for traders going between Upper Dolpo and Tibet. It also links two beautiful valleys, Tarap and Phoksundo. During your trek to the pass, you will get these massive, sweeping panoramas of all the Himalayan peaks around you. Your camera will certainly be in high demand during this excursion. However, it is important to acknowledge that the journey has its challenges. The ascent and descent involve navigating rocky terrain and steep inclines, requiring significant physical effort. The rewarding views will certainly justify the exertion involved.
Sela (Gelu) La:
Situated at around 5,094 meters, Sela La is another high-altitude pass that trekkers encounter. This pass is located on the route between Shey Gompa and Namgung village. Crossing Sela La provides trekkers with stunning views of the rugged Dolpo landscape. The trek to this pass, like others in the region, requires good fitness and acclimatization.
Mo La Pass:
Reaching an altitude of approximately 5,027 meters, Mo La Pass presents trekkers with a demanding but rewarding experience. This pass provides access to further exploration of the culturally rich and scenically spectacular regions of Upper Dolpo. The views from Mo La Pass are extensive, showcasing the vastness of the Himalayan range.
Niwar La Pass:
Niwar La pass, at an altitude of approximately 5,110 meters, is another high pass that makes the upper Dolpo trek challenging. The area surrounding this pass is one of Nepal’s most remote and undisturbed locations. The views are spectacular, and the sense of isolation is profound.
Jungben La Pass:
Reaching an elevation of approximately 5,550 meters, this is one of the highest passes that trekkers will cross. It provides some of the most spectacular views of the entire trek. Due to its high elevation, this pass is very challenging and requires proper acclimatization.
What are the rewards of the Upper Dolpo to Jomsom Trek?
The Upper Dolpo to Jomsom trek is an adventure into one of the most remote and culturally unspoiled regions of Nepal. It’s a trip unlike any other, far from the more traveled paths. It’s not an easy walk, but the reward is worth it, leading to a world where ancient traditions and untouched landscapes reign supreme. These are five of the greatest rewards trekkers have to look forward to:
Immersive Culture Experience
Upper Dolpo has largely preserved its ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture for hundreds of years. Trekkers can witness traditional practices, visit ancient monasteries like Shey Gompa, and interact with individuals living in harmony with nature.
Spectacular Terrains
The trek passes through some of the country’s spectacular terrains. From the crystal-clear, turquoise waters of Shey Phoksundo Lake to the hostile high-altitude passes and desolate plateaus, the landscape is breathtaking. The region’s virgin nature leaves one with a feeling of isolation and proximity to the bare beauty of the Himalayas.
Shey Phoksundo National Park
It is the country’s biggest national park and is teeming with varied flora and fauna. Trekking through it allows one to spot endangered animals such as snow leopards, Himalayan blue sheep, and other birds. The different types of ecosystems of the Shey Phoksundo park, which range from dry deserts to alpine forests at high altitude, make it an amazing natural experience.
Challenging High Passes:
One of the major rewards of the Upper Dolpo trek is the chance to trek above challenging high passes like Kang La Pass, Numa La Pass, and others. Physically demanding, these passes are a challenge and a reward, offering a sense of accomplishment and unparalleled vistas. Standing at the top of these passes, among towering peaks, is an experience in itself.
Solitude and Adventure
Unlike more popular trekking trails in Nepal, Upper Dolpo remains quite remote. This means that trekkers experience seclusion and adventure, which are increasingly rare. The feeling of venturing into a far-off wilderness, where very few people have ever set foot, is an extra reward for those who want an authentic trekking experience.
