Trip Overview
Upper Mustang Overland Adventure is a thoughtfully designed overland trip for travelers seeking the cultural and natural richness of Upper Mustang without trekking on motorable roads. This trip involves hiking and a jeep safari in the Mustang region of Nepal.
The itinerary avoids trekking on motorable roads and focuses on comfortable drives with purposeful, rewarding walks. The journey follows the ancient trans Himalayan trade route into the former Kingdom of Lo, revealing stark high desert landscapes, wind-carved cliffs, and timeless settlements. You explore centuries old monasteries, royal palaces, and mysterious cave dwellings while gaining insight into a living Tibetan Buddhist culture that has changed little over generations. This trip suits travelers who value comfort, cultural depth, and meaningful experiences at altitude, without the demands of a full trek.
In recent years, road access in Upper Mustang has increased, and jeep traffic now frequently uses sections of the traditional trekking trail. On 8 July 2025, a flood at the Rasuwagadhi border between Nepal and Tibet led to its closure and shifted trade activity to the Korala border in Mustang. This change has brought regular jeep movement onto the same routes used by trekkers, altering the overall trekking experience. Because of this, we have designed a new itinerary that allows you to experience Upper Mustang in comfort without having to walk on trails that are frequently used by jeeps.
On this trip, you travel primarily by private 4WD Jeep along scenic mountain roads, combined with short, easy walks to villages, monasteries, cave complexes, and historic sites. This trip suits travelers with a normal level of fitness. Walking is limited to short hikes and village walks, usually one to three hours at a relaxed pace. No trekking experience is required.

What makes Upper Mustang Overland Adventure Special?
The traditional Upper Mustang Trek follows a full walking route from Jomsom to Lo Manthang and back, using the same trail in both directions. From Jomsom, you hike all the way to Lo Manthang and retrace your steps back to Jomsom. In recent years, increased jeep traffic due to trade through the Korala border has made parts of this trail busy, which has changed the overall experience.
Upper Mustang Overland Adventure offers a different way to explore the region. The trip is mainly done by jeep, with short walks each day on quieter trails and to key cultural and sightseeing spots. This allows you to experience Upper Mustang comfortably without walking on trails that are frequently used by vehicles. Discover Upper Mustang in comfort, culture, and quiet landscapes.
