One of the most memorable aspects of staying in the tea house is the hospitality provided by the owner. The accommodation point has a twin-sharing bed and a small table. Likewise, a simple mattress, pillow, and blanket are essential components of a bed. Similarly, the bathroom is Western-style and shared among the guests. In addition, the accommodation point offers Wi-Fi, charging, and a hot shower facility, but costs extra.

It’s been a while since I travelled to Tengboche with these guys in December 2019, but felt I need to give them the glowing review they so deserve, from the moment I got off the plane to the moment I got back on it to leave, I felt completely safe and looked after, every moment of my trip was well planned and enjoyed, I would not travel with anyone else when I come back to hit base camp, I would 110% recommend Passang and Sabin who was my guide on the trek, already planning 2021
Tengboche Monastery Trek: History and Location
At 3,867m/12,687 ft, Tengboche Monastery is a significant pilgrimage site in the Khumbu region of Nepal. The monastery, also known as Dawa Choling Gompa, holds great religious significance among the Sherpa communities. The monastery is located within the Sagarmatha National Park and Solukhumbu District, in the Koshi Province, in the village of Tengboche. Located en route to the iconic Everest Base Camp trail, the monastery is not only religiously significant among the Buddhist Sherpa people. Still, it has also become a major highlight of the Everest region.
Founded in 1916 by Lama Gulu, the Tengboche Monastery has become a crucial spiritual center known as the region’s largest gompa. The Lama Gulu chose the location for building the monastery due to its peaceful surroundings and stunning views of the Himalayas. The monastery’s history is also tragic, as it faced hardship in the initial phase. In 1934, a devastating earthquake damaged the monastery, and in 1989, a disastrous fire destroyed its structure and valuable religious artifacts. Despite that, the monastery was rebuilt, and today, it continues to be a place of spiritual learning in the Khumbu region.
Major Attractions of the Tengboche Monastery Trek
Tengboche Monastery
Indeed, the Tengboche Monastery is the prominent attraction of the journey. The monastery is the site of the “Sacred Sites Trail Project,” which attracts a large number of tourists yearly to witness its beauty. The Tengboche monastery features classic Tibetan Buddhist architecture, complete with murals and intricate woodcarvings, making it visually attractive. Likewise, the tranquil environment of the monastery, with its prayer flags and snow-capped peaks in the surrounding landscape, makes it an ideal setting for meditation and reflection.
Sagarmatha National Park

The national park is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, taking trekkers through rhododendron forests, past wild animals, and alongside icy rivers. Likewise, from towering peaks to encounters with diverse flora and fauna, the trek in the Sagarmatha National Park zone, during the Tengboche Monastery trip, showcases the region’s natural beauty and biodiversity.
Mountain Views

From the start to the end of the trek, trekkers can expect to glimpse towering peaks, adding to the thrill of the trek. Kusum Kangruru and Kongde Ri are the first mountains seen from Lukla. Likewise, from Phakding, they’ll get a first close-up view of Thamserku. Similarly, the view of Kongde Ri, Thamserku, and Kusum Kanguru surrounds the Namche Bazaar. Additionally, trekkers can witness a view of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam from the Everest View Hotel and Tengboche.
Sherpa Culture
The Sherpa culture is another aspect that draws visitors from around the world to experience the short yet rewarding Tengboche Monastery Trek. From landing at Lukla to walking through numerous villages, the journey takes trekkers through the local Sherpa villages, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the region’s rich traditions and spiritual life. While walking through the villages, trekkers get to experience the way of living and their hospitality. However, at Tengboche monastery, trekkers get a deeper understanding of the Sherpa people, their culture, beliefs, and their connection to Tibetan Buddhism, making the trek culturally enchanting.

At 3,880m above sea level on Syangboche Hill, the Everest View Hotel offers a surreal view of Mount Everest and a chance for relaxation. Likewise, Khumjung village is one of the largest Sherpa settlements in the region and has numerous attractions.
Can you combine the Tengboche Monastery Trek with the other Everest Treks?
Yes, we can combine the Tengboche monastery trek with other Everest treks. The monastery lies between the trails of iconic destinations, so combining it with others will be smooth and rewarding. However, combining the trip with other treks adds to the trek’s length and cost. Still, combining the Tengboche trek with Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes is a common option.
Tengboche Trek with EBC
The Tengboche trek with Everest Base Camp is the most popular combined trip. In fact, Tengboche serves as a popular stop point along the trek to Everest Base Camp. Thus, more than a combined trek, the Tengboche trip with EBC is an iconic Everest Base Camp trek itself. The trek continues from Tengboche to Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorakshep before reaching Everest Base Camp, taking 2-3 days. Moreover, the distance from Tengboche monastery to Everest Base Camp is 28.6km in a single trip.
Tengboche Trek with Gokyo Lakes
Another popular combination option with the Tengboche trek is the Gokyo Lakes. Combining the trip is one of the ideal ways to experience the beauty of the Everest region within one package. The combined trek of Tengboche monastery with Gokyo generally takes 14-18 days, depending on the itinerary plan and the pace of the trekker. To combine the Gokyo Lakes trek with the Tengboche monastery trek, trekkers first get to Tengboche and then descend from there to Phortse or Dole. Afterward, trekking through the Machhermo, the trail takes you to Gokyo Valley. Another day involves hiking to Gokyo Ri and then returning.
Can we take kids on the Tengboche Monastery Trek?
Yes, you can take kids on the Tengboche monastery trek, as it is suitable for families with children and older adults. The trek is slow-paced and offers some of the majestic scenes of the Himalayas; kids can make the trip while enjoying the views and without getting sick. Likewise, the ease of accessibility of the trek, beginning with flying to Lukla and then continuing with a leisurely walk to Namche Bazaar and Tengboche village, makes it an excellent experience for kids.
Also, the trek to Tengboche Monastery offers a stunning view of the top of the mountains and a variety of landscapes, which will be visually captivating for children. Similarly, the trek offers children a chance to encounter other cultures in other countries, thereby enhancing their personal development. Additionally, the trek’s itinerary is customizable and flexible, which helps to accommodate the needs of families with children.
Permits required for Tengboche Monastery
You need a Sagarmatha National Park Permit and a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit for the Tengboche Monastery trek. The permits required for the Everest Base Camp trek and the Trengboche trek are the same, so trekkers who change their mind about combining the two can adjust their itinerary schedule immediately. Additionally, the trek takes place within the territory of Sagarmatha National Park; therefore, a Sagarmatha National Park Permit is required. Each trek in the region requires a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit, which is a substitute for a TIMS card.
Cost of Sagarmatha National Park Permit:
Nationality | Cost (Per Pax) |
SAARC Nationals | NPR 1,500 |
Foreign Nationals | NPR 3,000 |
